Acclaimed rock band, and one of my absolute favs-on-the-iPod, Jimmy Eat World announce a headlining North American tour kicking off September 21st in Atlanta, GA. Yeeee=ha! This incredible band will tour in support of their forthcoming new album Invented which is slated for a September 28th release on DGC/Interscope.
Jimmy Eat World formed Arizona circa 1993. Singer/guitarist Jim Adkins and drummer Zach Lind, had been friends since preschool, and joined with guitarist Tom Linton and bass player Mitch Porter to try their hand at music. In its early years, Jimmy Eat World was a super-hot punk rock band, with Linton serving as their primary singer. (This is when I totes feel in love with them. Who doesn’t love a punk boy?) Within the span of a couple of years, the band recorded and released three singles and a full-length on local label Wooden Blue Records.
The band’s name came from a crayon drawing made after an incident between Linton’s younger brothers, Jim and Ed, who bickered like cats and dogs. Jim usually won, but Ed sought revenge by drawing a picture of Jim shoving the Earth into his mouth; the picture bore the caption “Jimmy eat world”

The Give a Damn Campaign recently released its latest video in its monthly series to highlight the discrimination that the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender community continues to face. This month, Cynthia Nixon, Sharon Osbourne and Karolína Kurková talk about why they give a damn about gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender parents and their kids. These three mommiess are joined by a father and a grandmother to call attention to the discrimination that families headed by gay parents face each and every day in this country. STOP THE OPPRESSION, HATERS!
Many mainstream child health a&social service organizations, including the American Academy of Pediatrics, American Medical Association, American Psychological Association, Child Welfare League of America and National Association of Social Workers, have gone on record to support adoption by qualified lesbian and gay parents. Unfortunately, many road blocks remain in place, including 3 states that have blanket bans prohibiting any lesbian or gay couple from adopting. In many states, the parenting law for gay and transgender people is still unclear. And who has more love the the gays! We love kids!
In addition, there are 6 million to 14 million lesbian and gay parents in this country that cannot do all they would like to ensure the emotional and financial security of their children. In part, because current federal and state regulations extend thousands of protections to married couples and their families, but not necessarily to same-sex couples and their families. Also, many companies do not provide the same health insurance benefits for their gay employees, those employees’ health insurance won’t cover their domestic partners or the children of their domestic partners who are not adopted by the employee.
It is time for things to change. The Give a Damn Campaign urges everyone to share this video – especially with the straight people in their lives – to educate them about the need to get involved in helping protect families headed by gay and lesbian parents. The Give a Damn Campaign, a project of Cyndi Lauper’s True Colors Fund, is a bold, web-based initiative with the goal of educating and engaging the straight community in the advancement of gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender equality. The call-to-action campaign kicked off in April with the release of its first series of videos featuring Cyndi Lauper, Elton John, Whoopi Goldberg, Jason Mraz (who I want to marry), Cynthia Nixon, Anna Paquin, Sharon & Kelly Osbourne, Judith Light, Kim Kardashian, Clay Aiken, Wanda Sykes, Eric Roberts (sinister sexy), and Kevin Alejandro. Thursday, NBC’s “Today” show announced they are changing their rules for the annual wedding contest! You know – that contest where a lot of cute and perky couples compete to get a huge dream wedding for free? Yeah, you know what I am talking about…Well now, NBC had decided it just won’t be Jack & Jill running obstacle coursed dressed in tuxes, but that Adam & Steve can too! As of Thursday, NBC is going to allow same-sex couples to apply for a ceremony conducted on the show. AMEN!

“We’re thrilled that `Today’ show’s `Modern Wedding Contest’ now recognizes that a wedding celebrates love and commitment, whether the spouses are straight or gay,” said Jarrett Barrios, president of the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation.
NBC has claimed that their policy was reflective of the law. Same-sex couples were excluded ’cause New York law prevents queens from getting wedding licenses. SCREW YOU NEW YORK! But NBC said GLAAD pointed out that a same-sex couple would be able to get hitched in another state, and still have a ceremony in New York. The only time same-sex couples were allowed to apply for the “Today” wedding was in 2005, when an out-of-state wedding was held. No gay or lesbian couples were among the finalists, however.
“Moving forward, we ensure that our future wedding contestants will be inclusive to all couples,” NBC said.
Now before you expect to see two Bears competing under the watchful eye of Meredith Vierra, think again…Although “Today” viewers decide which couple to get hitched on TV, America will choose from four that “Today” producers screen and put up for a vote. So there’s no guarantee that even if same-sex couples apply for the on-air wedding, viewers will have a chance to select one to participate. But, no doubt one of those producers is a fairy – so we will be bound to see a queer couple before too long!
GLAAD said it only learned last week that same-sex couples weren’t allowed to apply, and issued a “call to action” for members to complain to NBC. Thousands did, the organization said.
