Gay worker claims Facebook ‘LIKE’ got him axed

Thank Madonna I don’t work for the Library of Congress! One of their former management analyst is claiming he was TERMINATED after he “LIKED” a Facebook page for same-sex parents, an act he says led to his boss discovering he is gay. Dum-dum-DUM!
Peter TerVeer liked “Two Dads” on Facebook, a group that “promotes the gay and lesbian community.” When his manager, John Mech, discovered he was gay, TerVeer’s positive performance reviews turned negative. Soon, his boss started making nasty statements about his sexual orientation.
TerVeer said he started to receive e-mails from Mech that contained ‘religiously motivated harassment and discrimination.’ Mech then called him into a meeting for the purposes of ‘educating him on hell and that it awaited him for being a homosexual.’
The stress of this emotional, religious, and ludicrous onslaught was a bit too much for TerVeer, who began to suffer from serious stress, so intense that TerVeer’s therapist ordered him to take medical leave. Eventually, he was fired last week for missing 37 consecutive days of work. (A month!) But honestly, would you get out of bed everyday if you knew a religious sermon was waiting for you?
A spokeschick for the Library of Congress said she could not comment on personnel matters. But they released a statement saying, “Library of Congress employees, like all employees in the federal government, have protection against workplace discrimination under Title VII of the Civil Rights Act. Library employees who believe they have been subjected to discrimination may avail themselves of an internal administrative process to address their equal employment opportunity complaints.”
Whatever the outcome, and we hope that this kind of homophobia is not tolerated, this is a dramatic reminder of how social media can effect your jobby-job. The question of what’s private and what’s not on social networking sites is rearing its head in the workplace more often. This month Maryland became the first state to ban the practice of asking for a job candidate or worker’s social networking password; and Illinois is considering similar legislation.
Facebook has threatened to “take action to protect the privacy and security of our users” in cases where employers seek passwords.
While most companies don’t cyber snoop on workers and job candidates, it can be TOTALLY legal for your boss to dig thru your sites and take adverse action against you for something on your Facebook or LinkedIn profiles. Be careful out there, remember whatever you say can be seen by almost everyone, forever….
