The Hunger Games! My Review!

March 21st, 2012 by Dick

So, I saw The Hunger Games yesterday.

I got in, because I am one of the country’s LEADING bloggers, and because I’ve been hate-fucking a PR guy from Weinstein Company for about a year now. (Whenever I get steamed at the world, I call this little bottom boy up and ride him till I’m calm again…)

So, I’ll cute to the chase, It’s pretty fantastic.  I have to admit – I never read the books.  Why would I?  My reading comprehension is pretty high, After all, look at my writing ability! But seriously, I don’t read kids books. I never read Twilight, I never read any of the Harry Potter stuff, and I didn’t know anything about Hunger Games till my nieces and gay friends started jabbering about it.

Soooo, anywho…It’s real real good. Great affects. Good acting. Fast moving plot. I will save the detailed blow-by-blow for Entertainment Weekly.  Here are my sublte takes:

Elizabeth Banks will fuck your shit up:  Banks, who I adore as Avery Jessup on 30 Rock, is incredible as some crazy-looking Hunger Games PR person. I didn’t recognize her at all. Not under the pounds of pancake make-up and glamour. Best transformation since The Iron Lady.

If your a chicken-hawk, this is the film for you: I have to admit, Ive already developed some new kinky fantasies around Peta and Gale (Josh Hutcherson and Liam Hemsworth). THEY ARE SMOKIN” HOT!

Lenny Kravitz!:  WHO WAS BORN IN 1964 – LOOKS AMAZING. Unbelievable. He should be nominated for some kind of award. He looks like he is 24.  I can’t!

The Fashions!: It’s not a good movie for the gays unless you have some hot fashions! And boy, does this flick have them. From the Appalachian chic of District 12, to the fabulous futuristic and retro-metro fashions of capital city, you will find several new looks for your spring line!

Wes Bentley And His Incredible Flaming Beard:  Wes Bentley is one hot looking bastard to begin with…In this movie, he has some kind of super-hot flaming beard. Now normally, I’d find this to be awfully tool-ish. Like 5 Hour Energy or the Jersey Shore.  But on Wes, it’s smoking…..

Blake is Coming!

March 18th, 2012 by Dick

.

The internationally renowned (and completely adorable) vocal group, BLAKE, gear up for their debut US release through Merovee Records. Get ready to heat up those iTunes!

For those of you not in the know… Blake are a classical vocal quartet, comprising Ollie Baines, Humphrey Berney, Jules Knight and Stephen Bowman. They are widely known as the group who formed on Facebook. (Why not, that is where I meet all my tricks!)

They released their debut album “Blake” in 2007, which won the Album of the Year Award at the Classical BRIT Awards in 2008.[ The album contains covers of popular classical songs and themes from the movies, to create a more commercial classical-pop crossover sound.

They sang for Shirley Bassey at her 70th birthday party, and performed in front of 80,000 football fans at Wembley Stadium. In the summer of 2007 their version of the ‘Swing Low’ was chosen as the Official Anthem of the England rugby team for the 2007 Rugby World Cup.

In 2009, baritone Dominic Tighe ditched the boys to return to acting. So, they once again used  social media to recruit, looking for a new member on Twitter! After two weeks, and 55,000 subscribing to their “tweets”, Humphrey Berney (better known as “Barney”) joined the gang. (Evidently, the fact that I couldn’t sing was not enough for them. )

Legendary songwriter, Diane Warren, penned the majority of the songs on their new record, lending to the band a new and captivating sound. Members of Michael Buble’s backing band were also on board, as well as veteran producers Marc Swersky and Steve Greenwell. To date, the boys of BLAKE have achieved acclaimed success overseas selling over one million records with 3 international releases; two were nominated for Album of the Year in the UK, one is a Classical Brit Award winner. The natural evolution and growth of the band can be heard on the album’s first single Start Over“ (available via itunes now! Buy it you whore! )

Gay Porn Star Can Be A Teacher In FLA!

March 16th, 2012 by Dick

.

It’s always nice to hear of a success story. Or a story of someone making a radical career transition. Or someone getthing them out of a bad news job into something a bit more uplifting…

A former gay porn actor/director, who was fired for violating the Miami-Dade School Board’s code of ethics, has reportedly been cleared to pursue his teaching certificate again.

Shawn Loftis, 36, spent six years in gay pornography and owned his own company, World of Men, until he quit the industry in 2010. He then got a job as a substitute teacher at Nautilus Middle School in Miami Beach.  Loftis was drummed out of school though when later targeted in a “moral crusade” by a principal, eventually fired for violating the School Board’s code of ethics and for gross immorality.

In November, the Florida Department of Education banned Loftis from obtaining a teaching certificate for five years, but that decision was reversed last week by the state’s Education Practices Commission. Since he has already passed the exam, Loftis just needs a job to resume teaching.

“I just hope that a position comes available at Miami Beach High; that is where I really want to be,” he said.

Miami-Dade Public Schools spokesman John Schuster said the certificate, however, does not guarantee employment.  Translation: Good Luck Porny!

“You Can Play”: Anti-Homophobia Effort By Hot Jocks!

March 15th, 2012 by Dick

The You Can Play project, with the backing of numerous National Hockey League (NHL) players and other supporters, is launching an aggressive advocacy program to change the sometimes homophobic culture of locker rooms with a message that athletes should be judged on athletic skill and ability, not sexual orientation.

A large number of high-profile – AND HOT – NHL dudes are filming public service announcements (PSAs) in support of You Can Play. The first PSA debuts during the first intermission of today’s NBC Sports broadcast of the game between the Rangers and  Bruins. Other videos will follow shortly, and all videos can be found at YouCanPlayproject.org, which also will serve as a resource for straight and gay athletes, coaches and fans.

“The goals for You Can Play are clear,” according to co-founder Patrick Burke. “We want to make locker rooms safe for all athletes, rather than places of fear, slurs and bullying. The casual homophobia in sports has to change, so all athletes know that what counts is whether you can play the game.

Burke, a scout for the Philadelphia Flyers, has been a straight ally in sports since his younger brother Brendan came out as gay while manager of the Miami University ice hockey team. Brendan’s story became national news because of his closeness to the NHL and took on deeper meaning when he was killed in a 2010 car accident. Burke’s father, Toronto Maple Leafs general manager Brian Burke, has joined Patrick in filming a PSA in support of You Can Play.

“The hockey community united behind Brendan because he loved the game, and that’s what matters. The NHL players stepping forward to support You Can Play know that creating a homophobia-free environment will make their teams and the sport better,” Patrick Burke continued. “It’s important for straight athletes at all levels to step up and let gay athletes know they will be accepted, and to let other straight athletes know that homophobic language and attitudes are never appropriate. This project is a combined effort of gay and straight athletes and fans, but the message is largely for straight audiences.”

While more than 30 NHL players have already volunteered to support the program, You Can Play will extend beyond hockey, encompassing all sports, athletes and fans. The organization is in active discussions with officials and players in several other sports leagues.

Casual homophobia doesn’t belong in any sports setting, whether in the locker room or in the stands. You Can Play will help to change the behavior and acceptance of fans,” according to co-founder Brian Kitts, who has spent more than ten years in the front offices of professional hockey, basketball, lacrosse and soccer teams. “Most fans care about exciting games, great performances and wins, not whether a player is gay or straight. Fans need to send the message to other fans that sexual orientation just doesn’t matter.”

You Can Play will launch with a series of videos from professional athletes but will quickly begin adding user-generated content. The organization welcomes video content from pro teams, university teams and athletes, club athletes and sports fans who value skill and healthy competition first. Over the next year, You Can Play will provide educational materials, workbooks, online coaching and other high school- and college-based programs aimed at letting coaches and players discuss sexual orientation.

“Familiarity and understanding is the best way to promote acceptance,” Witman said. “Athletes who work with us know that hurting your friends and teammates doesn’t get a win.”

Now, make sure to check out  You Can Play  on Facebook, Twitter (@YouCanPlayTeam) and YouTube (YouCanPlayProject). We know how you kids LOVE that social media stuff!

NBC Sports and HBO have joined the launch effort to support the creation and release of the PSA featuring NHL players. Initial funding for You Can Play was provided by the Gill Foundation, the Palette Fund and the Colin Higgins Foundation.

Ricky Martin: Living La Vida, But Not Loca

March 9th, 2012 by Dick

.

Some gurls just don’t shut up…

Ricky Martin has become one gabby queer.

He came out of the closet, and now he spends all his media time chatting away about LGBTQ issues, his personal life with his domestic partner Carlos Gonzalez Abella of four years and being a same-sex set of parents to his three-year-old twin boys.

His career meanwhile – well, it has certainly changed since his “Living La Vida Loca” days… He has returned to Broadway (after last appearing in Les Miserables” at eight-years-old in 1996) playing Che Guevara in a new production of “Evita” , opening this month.

The child star, a former member of Menudo, has been performing in front of audiences all his life, delighting his countless female and male, mostly gay, fans.

Now, Martin has that Hollywood leading man quality (just look at his photo shot by Bruno Staub for Details (March 2012)) and confidence being comfortable with who he really is today. In an interview with journalist Mickey Rapkin, Martin, who practices Buddhism, and has met the Dalai Lama, spoke about his fame, his views on same-sex marriage, sex life and his loves:

“I think there’s a stolen faith-an interpretation of what God ‘says.’ That’s your God-I have my god. It’s about civil rights. I’m not telling you what to believe. I wish people understood that love manifests in different ways. Allow me to have my life and I won’t mess with yours. That’s when I struggle and get angry and punch the table. And then I talk. Martin Luther King, Jr. said: ‘Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter.”

Life Is Never A Drag With RuPual

March 8th, 2012 by Dick
 .

.

Talking about a girl knowing how to WERQ!

Since she was a little girl struggling in the projects of Detroit (I know, not her real bio – but that is what they said in the beginning of Supermodel,  RuPaul has always known how to WERQ!

The sassy lady has done it with a ton of fierceness, fashion and fun. There’s almost nothing that the multi-talented entertainer can do. The drag goddess has been a singer, actor, talk show host, and now reality show super-star.

Her  “Drag Race” on Logo can rightfully be credited with bringing the art of drag to the forefront of acceptance among the American mainstream. We hear at GayLive Network can’t miss a SINGLE episode. And this season? Damn Sharon Needles! Damn!

But, back to the diva…Did I also mention that this shy, retiring, wallflower is also an author? Yup! Her semi-autographical and how-to-do guide to becoming your beautiful self, “Lettin It All Hang Out” (1995) is the benchmark of glamour.

Editors of Entertainment Weekly (January 27, 2012) had fun talking with PuPaul’s passions-music. Lip-syncing? Not really Ru Paul’s thing,  but did it to Donna Summer’s “MacArthur Park.”  Bruce Springsteen’s “Dancing in the Dark” makes her cry, lyrics like “I’m just about starving tonight” are so sad.

Recalling the ’80s, it’s Melba Moore’s “Underlove,” RuPaul, then a go-go dancer in Atlanta, “used to play that cassette to death.”

And for the ’90s? Her own, “Supermodel,” “That’s what I was doing in the ’90s-I was around the world performing that song,” she laughs.

Most overused song by drag queens? Hands down, Gloria Gaynor’s “I Will Survive.” But adds, Obviously, young queens are tearing up Beyonce and Britney and all that stuff, but I’m going to go old-school.”

Taylor Lautner Is Shy About the Skin

March 1st, 2012 by Dick

Taylor Lautner has revealed that he is wiling to go shirtless in movies only if it “makes sense.

TO WHO?  It makes sense to us Tay-Tay!

The 20-year-old actor, beloved by billions as  wolfboy Jacob Black in the ‘Twilight’ movies, has used skin to win in the past. But know that his money-making franchise is ending, is he trying to become a more serious commodity?

He was adamant that he wouldn’t strip off too much in his movie ‘Abduction’.

In the original script there were six or seven shirtless scenes and I said, ‘No, my character can’t just walk outside and say, ‘Oh, I feel warm today, let me take off my shirt.’ It had to make sense,Stuff.co.nz quoted him from Company mag.

Proving that he isn’t just obsessed with his body…Lautner is also pleased with his new diet. (Are you seeing a pattern here?) He used to eat a great deal to stay in shape while portraying Jacob but now he is more relaxed about what he puts into his body.

“I’m enjoying that I don’t have to be in the gym six days a week now, or force-feeding myself every two hours to stay bulky.

That is nice Tay. Just do us a favor. Stop thinking so much and keep the shirt off.  We can take you seriously when your older. Let’s just stare at those abs for right now.

New CD From Idina Menzel

February 29th, 2012 by Dick

Idina Menzel has a diverse career on the stage, in film and television, and in music.  The beloved Broadway star, best known for her work in the Rent, her Tony Award-winning performance as Elphaba in Wicked, and her recurring role in the hit TV series Glee, has spent much of the past two years crisscrossing the country, headlining concerts with world-renowned symphony orchestras. This past November, on Menzel’s 2011 tour itinerary, the star recorded her forthcoming PBS special Idina Menzel Live: Barefoot at the Symphony.  On March 6th, Concord Music Group will release the DVD and accompanying album.

The TV special, DVD, and the album, were captured in Toronto at Koerner Hall, a beautifully modernist, acoustically blessed space literally carved out of the city’s historic Royal Conservatory of Music headquarters. Menzel performs with the 52-piece Kitchener-Waterloo Symphony, under the direction of legendary conductor Marvin Hamlisch and her equally accomplished music director and pianist, Rob Mounsey (who has worked with everyone from Paul Simon, Steely Dan to Madonna, Usher and Rihanna).

Though Menzel’s symphony concerts have attracted sellout crowds and earned consistent critical praise, she was hesitant about the idea at first. “I’ve toured a lot in my life with different bands and different styles of music, but I stayed away from orchestras and symphonies for a long time, because I like to have a real intimacy with the audience, and I was afraid these big orchestras would usurp my ability to do that. But then I discovered that there’s a way to work with 80 musicians and make it feel like we’ve all known each other for years. I’m still able to explore my edgier side with songs like ‘Roxanne,’ but do it with an orchestra, which is really thrilling.

Menzel opens the set with “Life of the Party,” written by Andrew Lippa for his 2000 off-Broadway musical The Wild Party, which costarred Menzel and her husband, Taye Diggs. It was Menzel who came up with the clever idea of combining Cole Porter’sLove for Sale” with Sting’sRoxanne.” From Rent, the landmark musical that not only provided Menzel with her big professional break but also introduced her to Diggs, she chooses “No Day But Today.”  Other standouts include Lady Gaga’sPoker Face,” which she performed with Lea Michele on Glee and charged Mounsey with the challengeof coming up with a big, orchestral arrangement for it.  Mounsey also came up with a playful rendition of Rodgers and Hart’s “Where or When,” featuring a special guest, husband Taye Diggs.

With the PBS special and the album both completed, Menzel plans to go back on tour this summer.  In addition, Idina’s exemplary work continues with A BroaderWay, the foundation she established with Diggs in 2010 to help inner-city girls find outlets for self-expression through arts-related programs.
