Who Doesn’t Love Cute Gay Teens?
January 27th, 2011 by DickDid you catch the Christmas episode of “Glee” ? When the two little-LGBTQ love birds sang “Baby, It’s Cold Outside“? I melted.
“That was by far the gayest thing that has ever been on TV, period.” said Chris Colfer of the fan favorite scene between him and (my future husband) Darren Criss in last week’s Entertainment Weekly.
Chris, who snagged a Golden Globe for his performance as the bullied, but proud Kurt, appears on the cover of EW with co-star Darren for a story about the recent trend of gay characters on network television. The issue chronicles the history of gay teenagers on TV from classics like “My So-Called Life,” “Dawson’s Creek” and “Degrassi” to current ground breakers like “Glee” and “Pretty Little Liars“ (both of which were nominated for GLAAD Media Awards this week). Have you seen “Pretty Little Liars”? I am modeling my life after it! So juicy!
The article brings up a stellar point: Just how much has the television landscape changed over the past few years. In 2005, the folks over at “The O.C.” were met with resistance when they tried to show a short-lived relationship between Marissa (Mischa Barton) and Alex (Olivia Wilde). One of the show’s executive producers explained, “We could’ve had more support in terms of making that a long-term story line. There were definitely some questions about how long we were doing this story. And we did have to do some editing to make kisses shorter and pull back on some physicality of the characters.”
But now, six years later, in the wake of the string of tragic gay youth suicides that shook the U.S., “Glee” has openly gay characters with a fledgling romance. Even on “90210“, the spawn of classic 90s super-hit “Beverly Hills 90210” we have hunky gay characters in believable plots! Check out this steamy vid to see what I mean…
